Island Oak lives on most of the California channel islands in moist canyons and upper ridges on sandstone. Sometimes on near solid rock. The tree itself looks like what it is, a historical throw back to past times. The leaves are large, dark green, and armed with short sharp serrations. These trees love fog drip, but tolerate many interior conditions. On our site the mother plant is 50 foot tall and 20 feet wide. In the cold of December 1990 it froze to the ground, (about 6-8 degrees F.) Only to grow back as good as new. A nice tree that is very suitable for a formal garden in coastal areas that have good drainage. Oaks.
