Cliff Buckwheat and Red Catchfly together in the wild west of San Luis Obispo.
Description
(Syn. Silene laciniata ssp. major) A 2' perennial with 1-2" red flowers. This grows within 5' of Morro Bay in beach sand but grows in many diverse soils and sites. In Los Osos it grows with Potentilla Egedii, Lupinus Chamissonis, and Erysimum insulare. I would not use this for a drought tolerant plant except in its narrow element. It is native near the coast from Santa Cruz to Baja. The red flowers are used by hummingbirds and the foliage is eaten by rabbits(usually leaving the flowers alone.)
