Description

Semi-evergreen. tree, 15-20', resembles a cross between Q. douglasii and Q. dumosa, along Colorado Desert to Baja, Paso Robles. 1. Oaks do not want to be overwatered. 1a. Oaks do like enough water to survive for the first 2-3 years. 2. Oaks do not want to be on drip. 2a. The best watering os sprinkler or hose@once/week for the first summer, then 1/month second summer, then 1-3 times in spring the third summer. 2b. Oaks are fine planted 30-50 ft. from a lawn. 3. Oaks do not like fertilizer. 4a. You can use some trace nutrients in some situations.(Unless the trees were just planted the chlorosis is probably horticultural. I.E., because of a lawn tree, weeds or septic system under the tree.) 4b. Chorosis also occurs because someone cut a ditch near, (within 2X the root system,) the tree. 5. Never use insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, or soil sterilants near oaks. 5a. Controling weeds with herbicides is ok. Some of the over-the-counter pre-emergents and Round-up are positive for the tree and the ecosystem. (Weeds are worse.)
