Description
Mahonia aquilfolium Compacta is probably a native plant, but there seems to be little information of it's origins. (If you hold the patent on it we never found you.) Compacta likes coastal sand. If you have a wet sand dune with wind protection and you need a low ground cover, this is the plant! All the rest of you can sit down and shut up, it doesn't grow well without regular lawn water and part-shade and even then it can look BAD. In the right spot like on a north side of a house with a small flower bed it can look good, sometimes when mixed with Ribes, Huecheras and maybe Satureja douglasii it can look stellar.
