A very attractive perennial sub-shrub with bright red flowers that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Usually grows on exposed areas of north slopes. You'll usually find Dudleyas, Keckiella antirrhinoides, Keckiella cordifolia, Cercocarpus betuloides, Diplacus aurantiacus, and Arctostaphylos spp.. Then again I found this bush penstemon one time in a swale between some Junipers out on the edge of the Anza-Borego desert in full sun. Ain't ecology swell? And you wonder why we do not give abosulte answers.
