Description
(synonym: Mimulus aurantiacus) A 2' high evergreen shrub with red flowers most of the year. The species ranges from Los Angeles county to San Diego county, California. Diplacus puniceus likes partial shade inland with some summer water(do not overwater or will elongate). Along the coast water first month or so only, then forget. Needs good drainage. It is not very cold tolerant and has frozen at 27 F., to the ground at 22 F., has recovered from temperatures to the low teens, but not well. Where happy a very nice bush . A Hummingbird Plant. The customers along the coast in beach sand write poetry about Red Monkey flowering most of spring and summer with hummingbirds and butterflies fighting over it.
