Description
Ceanothus papillosus is a five foot evergreen with scented foliage and stunning deep blue flowers. A glorious plant in almost all respects. It is serpentine tolerant, drought tolerant, and Ive seen it growing in seasonal creeks. It sustains no cold damage at 5 degrees F. in our area. The problem is growing it. This species is difficult in the nursery and in gardens. Not for a beginner. Some years, not for experts. If you're not real competent with California natives do not try! Water it extra in the winter. The first year dont let it get very dry until June 1, then turn the water off and do not water until the soil is cool, if at all. This plants wants to die if its not in its native range. I dont think it is lonely, but it sure is picky. Click here for more about California Lilacs (Ceanothus). Why do the roots of some of the Ceanothus look funny?
