Ceanothus cuneatus Sierra mt. lilac

Identification

Description

This is the Sierra form of Buckbrush, (Ceanothus cuneatus) and is commonly associated with Coffeeberry( Rhamnus californica tomentella), Flowering Ash ( Fraxinus dipetala) and Mountain Mahogany ( Cercocarpus betuloides) in red clay-loam soil. A fragrant blue flowered Ceanothus with small holly leaves that bambi does not seem to like. Sierra Buckbrush grows into an eight foot or so evergreen bush. Use as a light border hedge or plant a cluster of them as a resource island to provide cover for wildlife or start oak or pine trees. This evergreen plant is extremely showy during the flowering period in spring, and looks good at other times of the year. Ceanothus cuneatus Sierra shines as a companion/nurse plant for slower-growing species such as oaks, coffeeberry, and toyon, a plant that adds significant amounts of nitrogen into the soil by virtue of its nitrogen fixation capabilities, and a very fast-growing, showy pioneer plant for new landscapes.
