Description

(Lasthenia californica subsp. californica) Coast Gold Fields are an annual wild flower found in the coast ranges. Although they are small, only about three inches at their best, they are very showy in numbers. They have small daisy flowers only about a half inch in diameter. Always observe them with your back to the sun to get the best vantage point as their faces follow the sun. They grow in full sun and are fairly drought tolerant. They can be found in larger openings in the brush and open fields where there are few weeds. They are better at tolerating weeds than many of the other native wildflowers but still die out rapidly when competing for nutrients and water with the more aggressive European species. They grow well with other annual wildflowers such as poppies (Eschscholzia californica) and lupines (Lupinus species).
Syn. Lasthenia californica subsp. californica.
