Artemisia cana

Identification

Genus: Artemisia Species: cana Variety: None Cultivar: None
Common names: Silver Sage and Bodie Sage.

Description

This aromatic little bush makes a little mound of gray. Useful in places like Big Bear where you have an old log and wagon wheel you want to make look like Bodie or Death valley. Use as a level level for Great basin sage. Intermountain Flora puts Artemisia cana Bolanderii in with the general species. We've grown both and will probably only stock cana, not var. bolanderii. Both are native to California, bolanderii has more narrow leaves. Bolanderii grows in the flats around Mono Lake. It has done fine in the nursery as long as we do not over water. If we water too much Bambi eats it. Use where you want a small gray shrub to sub-shrub in a rock garden or to create an old west setting. Very effective planted in a graveled or paved area next to rustic wooden benches.
