Description

The keys do not agree. This plant (A. eximia) probably is a hybrid with Aquilegia formosa. A 2' perennial, with red-yellow flowers and green-gray foliage, Serpentine Columbine flowers from May through August. Native to the coast ranges, it grows best in partial shade inland, and tolerates full sun near the coast. this columbine grows near moisture, such as a seepage spot, and is not very drought tolerant. Tolerant of serpentine soil, but will also do well on clay soil, it is very showy, equal or better than A. formosa or A. shockleyi. The columbines attract hummingbirds, and are deer proof in many areas. The leaves are coarser and appear duller than A. formosa or A. shockleyi (formosa).
