Description
Native to east Mojave desert on limestone soils. The flowering stems are not branching as in Agavi deserti, but the flower clusters arise along the stem on short one-inch stalks. From a distance, it appears as a tall (about 15 ft.) spike of yellow flowers. A clumping plant that grows to several feet wide, and the spiny-edged leaves are 18 inches high and 3 inches wide. This plant also spreads by rhizomes or basal lateral shoots to produce new plants and so colonies of plants are formed. It should have good drainage and little water. At flowering time, the visual effect of this species growing in the landscape is very different from Agave deserti.
