Description

Desert Sand Verbena has white to light purple flowers and gray leaves. It is a wonderful annual verbena from the clean sandy areas of the Mojave desert, southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, and on slopes above the desert/valley in the Pinyon Juniper Woodland/Juniper Woodland/Joshua Tree Woodland. In many areas Bromus (mostly foxtail chess, Bromus madritensis) has completely replaced mostly native annuals including this Desert Sand Verbena. It likes full sun and sandy soil and grows in open areas between the shrubs and perennials, such as Opuntia basilaris, Opuntia species, Lupinus albifrons, Larrea divaricata, Fouquieria splendens, Encelia farinosa, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Olneya tesota, Chilopsis linearis, Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana, Echinocereus engelmannii, Yucca brevifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum var. polifolium, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, Gutierrezia microcephala, Artemisia tridentata, etc.
