Pruning

Light to moderate pruning is ok for most natives. The plants that have the [S] strategies should only be pruned if they look bad. Most natives will tell you when you need to prune them. If they look ukky, trim off the bad spots. Pruning often can be used to revive an old bush or untidy perennial. Prune the least necessary. Heavy pruning can kill most plants, particularly the stress tolerants. The best pruning time is when Bambi is pruning it, fall and early winter.

If a plant needs to be pruned heavily, do it in stages, over a period of years.

For more on pruning take a look at our pruning guide.
